Field Of Study

Toshi Onuki

Field Of Study

Friday, March 19th - Saturday, April 17th, 1999

Opening Reception: Friday, March 19, 1999, 6:00 – 8:00 pm

In Toshi Onuki’s installation, Field Of Study, a grouping of school chairs attached to immensely exaggerated desktops, recall school day memories of textbooks, blackboards and claustrophobic classrooms.  Like daydream hallucinations, the oversized desktops are blanketed in vivid green astro turf playfully suggesting playing fields or golf courses.  The ordinary sized chairs, unable to resist the unequal balance, lean in submission against the weight of their large counterparts.  Using the familiar icon of the school desk, Onuki humorously investigates the metaphoric oppositions between classroom/playground, inside/outside, and physical/psychological.  Originally from Japan, Toshi Onuki received his BFA from the San Francisco Art Institute.  Onuki has exhibited at The Lab and at Catherine Clark Gallery as well as a number of venues in Japan.
