A new site-specific installation by Sandra Ono

ENGRAMS

Opening Reception: Thursday, May 30, 2013, 7:00 - 10:00 pm
Project on View: May 30 - December 14, 2013

Bay Area artist Sandra Ono was in residence at Southern Exposure for the months of April and May, creating a new project in response to the architecture of Southern Exposure's building. Ono's work involves a seemingly obsessive accrual of everyday materials to investigate ideas of memory and body. For this project, Ono shaped and melted plastic sandwich bags with an iron to create the pointed tendrils that make up the installation's biomorphic forms. Engrams are thought by some scientists to be neurological traces of memories. For her installation, Ono engages peripheral space in the gallery to think about how memory lives in the corners of our minds.
