Sister Spaces

Group Exhibition

Sister Spaces

September 8 – October 28, 2000

Opening Reception: Friday, September 8, 2000, 6:00 – 9:00pm

Sister Spaces joins together art spaces from four points on the globe, in a collaborative partnership to explore notions of alternative contemporary art and the spaces that show such work, on a broader scale than has ever been presented in the Bay Area. Sister Spaces looks at how these spaces incorporate new forms of artistic production into their programming, examples of the next generation of artist-initiated spaces, and cutting-edge work from different cultures. The Sister Spaces are IT Park (Taipei, Taiwan), The Physics Room (Christchurch, New Zealand), YYZ Artists’ Outlet (Toronto, Canada), and Zé dos Bois (Lisbon, Portugal).  Highlighting the ingenuity that defines artist-run spaces, Sister Spaces presents a broad perspective on how individuals and organizations committed to new work and ideas operate under vastly different social and cultural structures.  Sister Spaces is formed around a series of questions that surfaced during this dialogue: what is alternative art?  What is an alternative art space?  What constitutes the margins of cultural production? Can a space be both established and alternative?  What is the gauge for metering alternative practices?  Sister Spaces addresses the shifting and non-fixed face and meaning of the alternative aesthetic, and looks at the relationship of mainstream culture to artist-driven projects and systems for exhibition.
