New Tendencies in Spanish Art

January 9 - February 7, 1998

Opening Reception: 6:00 – 9:00 pm, Friday, January 9, 1998 (with performances by visiting Spanish artists Itzal and Pistolo)

New Tendencies in Spanish Art is the first step in opening the channels for rich cultural dialogue between the United States and Spanish alternative art spaces.  The exhibit documents the resurgence of independent art spaces in Spain, featuring the work of twenty-six Spanish artists, representing eight spaces.  The history of alternative spaces in Spain is new, beginning after Francisco Franco’s death in 1975.  After decades of control, the power of Franco’s clenched fists started to weaken and culture once again began to flourish.

Participating Spaces: Arte Ego (Oviedo), Espai Haman (Barcelona), Contemporanea Art (Granada), La Esfera Azul (Valencia), La Voz de mi Madre (Salamanca), Lucernario (Oviedo), Purgatori (Valencia), Trasforma (Vitoria)
