Laura Hartwick’s installation Natural Happy Disaster Bargain Days questions the concept of “nature” and its cultural meditation in “a Californian wonderland of high-tech, flat stomachs and suburban beauty, punctuated by the occasional earthquake.” The piece combines paintings, objects, and interactive electronic media, commenting on how natural and environmental issues have been mediated into a position outside of political, economic and social structures. Hartwick received her MFA from the University of California, Davis in 1994. Her work has been included in various exhibitions in northern California and Arizona.
