Brut Love: Love, Romance, Eroticism, Desire, Obsession in the Work of Artists with Disabilities From Creative Growth Art Center

August 30 - October 13, 2002

Opening Reception: August 30, 2002, 6:00 – 8:00 pm

Like other members of society, people with disabilities think about sex, engage in it and create works of art about it. To avoid showing provocative work of this nature denies their sexuality, disregards their position as full, participating members of society, and renders invisible their years of sustained artistic production. By presenting art of an erotic or sexual nature by artists with disabilities, Brut Love challenges preconceived notions about a population that struggles with systemic invisibility and illuminates a sensitive topic that has eluded open, substantive discussion.

Panel Discussion: October 9, 2002, 7:30 pm

What's Love Got To Do With It?,  a panel discussion about eroticism and sexuality in the work of artists with disabilities from artistic, cultural, sociopolitical and psychological perspectives. This discussion is moderated by Reanne Estrada, curator of Brut Love. At 7 PM preceding the panel discussion is a DJ Battle featuring Gerone Spruill (aka DJ Disco Duck) vs. Mr Bollweevil.
