San Francisco, CA, September 21, 2022—Join us for Southern Exposure’s famous annual Monster Drawing Rally, an incredible, family-friendly live drawing and fundraising event, where 100 artists work side by side. As spectators spy on the creative process, sketches morph into full-fledged artworks immediately available for affordable prices. This year, the event will take place on Saturday, October 15, 3:00–9:00 PM in Southern Exposure’s gallery located in the Mission District of San Francisco.

Everyone is welcome at Monster Drawing Rally 2022! Online early bird tickets are just $15 through October 1, and $20 after October 1—space is limited, so purchase yours today! Tickets will also be available at the door for $25. Or volunteer and come to the event for free!

Combining the energy of a monster truck rally with the creativity and brilliance of the Bay Area art community, Southern Exposure’s annual Monster Drawing Rally is a can’t-miss event. The Monster Drawing Rally is an incredible afternoon and evening of live drawing and fundraising where 100 artists create brand-new work right before your eyes, in a frantic race against the clock. This year’s extended timeframe means that more artists can participate safely, spread across the larger time window so our gallery space never goes beyond a safe capacity for social distancing. It also means more time for attendees to enjoy the scene and scope out their favorite pieces or collect art gifts for the holiday season. A DJ will be spinning music for drawing and dancing, and delicious beer from our friends at Fort Point and a special cocktail from our nextdoor neighbor True Laurel will be available for purchase. There will also be a Kids’ Table with art materials for aspiring young artists eager to join the fray.

As part of our commitment to supporting artists during these difficult times, all participating artists have the option to receive up to a 50% commission of each sale, with remaining proceeds going directly to further the artistic and youth education programs at Southern Exposure. By attending the Monster Drawing Rally, you’re making it possible for us to continue to uplift the community through art.

“Visual art making can be a solitary practice, but Southern Exposure’s Monster Drawing Rally shakes things up,” says SoEx Interim Executive and Co-Director Elizabeth Brodersen. “There’s an incredible collaborative energy when so many artists come together to create alongside each other while being cheered on by their admiring fans, who enjoy the rare experience of watching works of art being born. Our Monster Drawing Rally–which has inspired many similar events across the country—is a great opportunity for artists to connect with each other and their community, and a vital source of financial support for SoEx’s many free artistic and educational programs and for the artists themselves. And it’s really fun!”

Legacy Drawings from previous Monster Drawing Rallies will also be available at this year’s event as well as online at www.soex.bigcartel.com beginning two weeks prior to the event. In addition, limited edition riso prints by acclaimed Bay Area artist Jeffrey Cheung will be available for purchase online with your tickets, and at the event.

You can view our current list of participating artists here. We also need volunteers before, during, and after the event to make the 2022 Monster Drawing Rally run smoothly. Volunteers help with everything from setup to breakdown, supporting artists, handling finished drawings, and checking tickets. Help make this year’s event a success when you sign up to volunteer. As a token of our appreciation, you’ll receive free admission to the event, and a drink ticket.

To support the health and safety of our community, masks are required while in the gallery and COVID safety protocols will be observed.

LAND ACKNOWLEDGMENT

Southern Exposure respectfully acknowledges that we reside upon the ancestral, unceded, occupied lands of the Ramaytush Ohlone peoples. As an organization that has been based in the Mission district of San Francisco since 1974, we honor and recognize the Native people who have stewarded this land for thousands upon thousands of years and who continue to do so. We further acknowledge that we, as an organization, have benefited from the use and occupation of this stolen land. Given the ongoing, damaging injustices of colonization, Southern Exposure is committed to supporting our Bay Area community of diverse artists and Indigenous-led partnerships that extend Indigenous self- determination in San Francisco. We aspire to be good stewards of arts, culture, and generative conversations while always mindful of greater equity and justice.

This living statement represents an ongoing dialogue with the Association of Ramaytush Ohlone.

ABOUT SOUTHERN EXPOSURE

Southern Exposure (SoEx) is an artist-centered nonprofit organization committed to supporting visual artists. Through our extensive and innovative programming, SoEx strives to experiment, collaborate, and further educate while providing an extraordinary resource center and forum for Bay Area and national artists in our Mission District space and off site, in the public realm.

An active presence in the Bay Area since 1974, SoEx is continually evolving in response to the needs of artists and the community while engaging the public in artists’ work. Central to our mission is to remain the most accessible space for visual artists to produce and present new work, learn, and connect. SoEx provides visual artists with the tools and resources they need to experiment in an open and supportive environment. We also work to advocate to new, diverse audiences and build an ever-growing community of enthusiasts and supporters of the visual arts.
