Southern Exposure's Annual Entry-Fee-Free Juried Exhibition and Screening of New Works by Northern California Artists

Southern Exposure invites Northern California visual artists to submit new work for Crank, the 2015 Juried Exhibition and Screening. All ideas and forms will be considered.

Entry fee:
Absolutely none! Never! Nope!

Who is eligible:
Open to artists living in Northern California, north of King City and south of Red Bluff. Artists and other instigators working in all media and formats are encouraged to apply. Work selected for this program will exemplify Southern Exposure’s mission and our commitment to supporting new, innovative, risk-taking contemporary visual art practices.

What work will be considered:

  • SoEx accepts only ONE submission per person for consideration per juried opportunity. Video artists may submit ONE work to be considered for the exhibition and ONE work to be considered for the screening.
  • Work must be new or have been completed within the current year.
  • Dimensions of gallery-based objects submitted may not exceed 5’ x 5’ x 5’ and 75 lbs.

How to submit your work:

  • For gallery-based objects, actual objects must be submitted in person by you or another friendly human and must be ready to install. Assembly of artwork during the drop-off days is strictly prohibited. See additional instructions below.
  • For performance, social practice or web-based pieces to be presented on opening night or during the run of the exhibition, please submit a description of the proposed project (max. 400 words), including how you intend for it to be presented at SoEx, and up to two support images. Submissions will be accepted between NOON on Friday, November 13 and NOON on Saturday, November 14 via Submittable.
  • For video-based work for EXHIBITION, artists must submit a link to their work on Vimeo or YouTube. The juror will view up to five minutes of your work. Video link submissions will be accepted from Friday, November 13 to Saturday, November 14 at NOON via Submittable. If work is accepted for the exhibition, the work must be available for presentation as a .mp4 or .mov video file, and must be able to be shown on a video monitor. Please submit no more than ONE work to be considered for the exhibition.
  • For video-based work for SCREENING, artists must submit a link to their work on Vimeo or YouTube. Work must not exceed 20 minutes in length. Video link submissions will be accepted from Friday, November 13 to Saturday, November 14 via Submittable. If work is accepted for the exhibition, the work must be available for presentation as an .mp4 or .mov video file. Please submit no more than ONE work to be considered for the screening.

Jurying and notification:
Artists whose work has been accepted to the exhibition will be notified by phone by 10:00 PM on Sunday, November 15, 2015. Artists whose work has been accepted to the screening will be notified by email by 10:00 PM on Wednesday, December 2, 2015.

ONLY accepted artists will be notified by these dates. Don't call us. We'll call you!

Non-selected work pick-up:
Monday, November 16, 2015, 10:00 AM – 8:00 PM
Work left after the pick-up day will be charged $5 per day storage fee.

Note: While every precaution will be made in the care of submitted work, Southern Exposure is unable to insure work during the jurying phase of Crank.

ABOUT THE JURORS

Lorelei Stewart, Director of Chicago’s Gallery 400 since 2000, has organized over 40 exhibitions, including the Joyce Award-winning exhibition Edgar Arceneaux: The Alchemy of Comedy...Stupid (2006). In 2002, she initiated the acclaimed At the Edge: Innovative Art in Chicago series, a commissioning program that encouraged experimental practices by Chicago area artists. From 1994 to 1998 Stewart was Program Director at New Langton Arts, San Francisco. She holds a BA from Smith College, a BFA from Corcoran College of Art and Design, and an MA in Curatorial Studies from the Center for Curatorial Studies at Bard College.

Gabriela Monroy is a Mexican video artist and curator working between Helsinki, Mexico City and Berlin. From 2005 through 2013 she was co-director of video_dumbo, an international moving image festival in New York, with German video artist Caspar Stracke. In 2014 they were selected as the programmers for the 60th Flaherty Film Seminar, NY. Gabriela also received a NYFA Fellowship in Digital and Electronic Arts (2011) and was a juror for Transitio – International Festival for Electronic Arts and Video. She has participated in exhibitions in Mexico, Europe, Korea and the US, and her work is part of the INBA’s collection, Mexico’s National Institute for Fine Arts.
