Shapeshifters Cinema, Round 7 Grantee

Shapeshifters Cinema, a monthly cinema series, features Oakland artist Chris Pew this May. Pew presents a 20-30 minute live performance based around fundamental assumptions for building an abstract cosmology. Afterwards he presents a mix of previously shown and un-shown video work. The show takes place May 11, 2014, 8:00 – 9:00 PM and is free. Doors open at 7:30 PM.

Dovetailing off recent programming at the Exploratorium, Shapeshifters is excited to present the work of pioneering light artists Dennis Keefe and (the late) Glenn McKay two premiere artists of psychedelic light shows of the 1960s. The highlight of the program is a live light art performance by Dennis Keefe with collaborators Jim Baldocchi and Lori Varga and musical accompaniment by Chris Musgrave (Lumerians) and Sarah R. Brady. The show takes place June 8, 2014, 8:00 – 9:00 PM and is free. Doors open at 7:30 PM.

Interface Gallery, Round 7 Grantee
Temescal Alley @ 486 49th Street
North Oakland, CA
Open Wednesday – Sunday, 11:00 AM – 4:00 PM

Interface Gallery's Producing Space is a group exhibition of new site responsive works by Aaron Finnis, Cybele Lyle, Amy M. Ho and Emma Spertus. While pursuing distinct practices, these four artists similarly work with re-purposed images, materials and existing spaces in ways that reference normative modes of representation, while also subverting them, instigating psychological responses and suggesting new possibilities. To varying degrees their architectural and material manipulations call attention to and critique the cultural production of space, exploring relationships between illusion and reality, constructed space, constructed subjectivity and power. Producing Space is an SFAQ Pick and was selected as a gallery pick by Christian Frock for SF Arts Monthly. It is on view through May 11, 2014.

Interface Gallery is also pleased to introduce Fictions, a compelling series of twelve immersive landscape photographs by Tressa Pack. In these works, Pack makes the tools of "photographic fiction" visible, placing lights, stands, silks, clamps, and power packs, in a variety of seemingly passive landscapes. The show is on view May 14 – June 8, 2014 with a reception on May 16, 6:00 – 8:00 PM.

In Irresistible Forces, Tamra Seal draws inspiration from such disparate sources as industrial design, film and Tantric tradition to create abstract sculptures that are both strange and oddly alluring. They operate simultaneously as prop, set, and transformational vehicle, drawing us in and eliciting surprising emotional responses. The show runs June 11 – July 13, 2014 with a reception on June 19, 6:00 – 8:00 PM.
