Radical Citizenship: The Tutorials

Can knee-jerk nationalism be swapped for a wild love of the local or is patriotism always collusion with Empire? Mary Walling Blackburn and Anhoek School present Radical Citizenship: The Tutorials, a series of one-on-one tutorials for participants with artists, activists, ecologists and academics from various disciplines. Over the course of four days, at Southern Exposure and Angel Island, tutors will engage participants in individualized inquiries into the nature of citizenship and its enactment. Each tutor will offer their own lyrical and practical examples and investigations of radical citizenship and, as such, an unregulated form of belonging. Together both the tutor and the participant will deconstruct the terms of what it means to be a citizen, upset its definition as based on a principle of exclusion, and redefine it as practice rather than status. The length of each tutorial will be negotiated on site between each participant and tutor, ranging from five minutes to an hour.

Simultaneously, tutorials have been taking place throughout the summer on Governor’s Island in New York City, in conjunction with No Longer Empty. Documentation of some of these tutorials will be on view in the gallery at Southern Exposure.

ANGEL ISLAND OVERNIGHT - FULL
Thursday, September 16, 2010, 12:30 pm - Friday, September 17, 2:00 pm
Location: Angel Island Kayak Campsite

To and From Angel Island: Meet at Pier 41 on Thursday, September 16, at 12:30 pm to catch the ferry to Angel Island. Ferries return to San Francisco from Angel Island at 10:10 am, 2:00 pm, and 3:25 pm on Friday, September 17.
Cost: $12/round trip ferry ticket (purchase tickets at Pier 41)

Angel Island was the historic site of West Coast immigration processing from 1910-1949. Amidst the island’s ghostly residue of an abandoned army facility, a Nike Missile site, the remains of an immigration processing facility, and groves of Eucalyptus, let's test other ways to belong to a nation. The tutorials on Thursday, September 16, will be held on Angel Island from 3 pm to dusk — after the last ferry has left. Tutorials the following day on Friday, September 17, will take place from 10:00 am - 2:00 pm (see below for more information).

Friday, September 17, 2010, 10:00 am - 2:00 pm 
Location: Angel Island. Tutor sites will be available at the ferry landing on Angel Island.

To and From Angel Island: Meet at the SF Ferry Building on Friday, September 17, at 9:00 am to catch the ferry to Angel Island. Ferries return to San Francisco from Angel Island at 2:00 pm and 3:25 pm.
Cost: $12/round trip ferry ticket (purchase tickets at Ferry Building)

September 17 is Citizenship Day. Tutorials will be organized to accommodate a naturalization ceremony, which will be conducted by the US Citizenship and Immigration Services at the Immigration Station on Angel Island from 11 am - noon.
