Paraformance [07]: Kecak

An Exploration of Privately Owned Public Open Space

Paraformance [07]: Kecak

Location: TBA (1-877-YO-REBAR for more information)

Celebrating the closure of Rebar’s yearlong COMMONspace project, and punching a hole in the scripted landscape of downtown's high rise office environment, Rebar teams up with One People Voice to bring Kecak to San Francisco's POPOS (privately-owned public open spaces). Kecak (pronounced: "KEH-chahk"), also known as Monkey Chant, is a Balinese music drama depicting a battle from the Ramayana where monkeys help Prince Rama fight the evil King Ravana. Performed by a circle of 100 or more performers wearing checked cloth around their waists, percussively chanting "cak", and throwing up their arms, this Kecak paraformance will also incorporate Sanghyang, a trance-inducing exorcism dance.

One People Voice/Gamelan X works with the vocal interlocking rhythms and physicality of Kecak, guiding a chant experience that builds community energy and unity through the interweaving of our voices. You'll experience a noticeable uplifting of physical energy and an increased sense of joy, and most likely laugh a great deal while sharing this time with new and renewed friends. Join us while we vocally and joyously expand the bandwidth of behavior within the domain of global corporate capital.
