Mapping the City is a day long symposium that will reflect on the last year of Southern Exposure's Off-Site programming, which has investigated artists' strategies for exploring and mapping public space by bringing the SoEx Off-Site artists together in dialog around the artistic legacy of the Situationists, contemporary mapping strategies, and tactics for urban intervention. Invited speakers include Simon Sadler, author of The Situationist City. In addition, the day will be punctuated by site-specific projects by several of the artists whose work has been a part of SoEx Off-Site since September 2006.

10:00 – 10:15 AM: Introduction
10:15 - 11:00 AM: Lecture: Situating San Francisco by Jeannene Przyblyski, SoEx Off-Site artist, historian and urban strategist.
Artist and historian Jeannene Przyblyski looks at the situationist legacy and some of the ways it has had an impact on art and activism in San Francsico. She will also consider some of the reasons why San Francisco is not Paris.
11:00 AM - 12:00 PM: Artist Presentations by Suzy Poling, Robin Frohardt, Packard Jennings, Amy Hicks, Glowlab, Rebar.
12:00 - 1:30 PM: Lunch. Witness SoEx Off-Site artists in action during lunch by Rebar and Neighborhood Public Radio.
1:30 – 2:30 PM: Artist Presentations by Neighborhood Public Radio, Ledia Carroll, Jeannene Przyblyski, Lee Walton, and Christian Nold.
2:30 – 3:30 PM: Panel Discussion: Urban Tactics: Artists Interventions in Public Space
Moderated by Alison Sant. Participants: Matthew Passmore, Rebar; Ledia Carroll; Lee Montgomery, Neighborhood Public Radio; Jeannene Przyblyski; and Joshua Short. Decades after the Situationist drifts, Dada tours, Fluxus events and happenings first led us from the gallery into the street, where is the urban artwork today and what aspects of the city does it respond to? This panel will address how artists in the Off-Site exhibition position themselves within the tradition of urban art practice and reinterpret its legacy. We will explore artistic tactics for intervention, focusing on the nature of the contemporary landscape and artists reactions to it. We will also consider the relevance of site-specificity and community engagement in a time of international art fairs and touring artists projects, questioning the role of arts organizations in supporting public work.
3:30 – 4:15 PM: Lecture: Atmospheres of Democracy, by Simon Sadler, author of The Situationist City, and Professor of Architectural and Urban History, University of California, Davis.
This talk considers how art and design has related a clean atmosphere to a truly civic life. In tracing a brief history from the Garden Cities of the nineteenth-century, through modernist urbanism to its radical successors in the Situationist and hippie movements in the late twentieth-century, he asks: what are the 'atmospheres of democracy' we have been craving?
