Mission Girls’ Young Queens on the Rise
Teaching Artist: Michelle Ibarra
In collaboration with Lynette Herrera, Jennifer Martinez & Norma Ruiz

For Las Rosas de la Misión, the Young Queens constructed an altar inspired by DIY aesthetics from Latin America that focus on creating art out of recycled materials. Building on the idea of honoring those who have come before us, the young artists learned about Ana Mendieta, a Cuban artist who was famous for creating silhouettes of her body in the earth out of natural materials. Students made their own silhouettes, along with their altar pieces, to pay tribute to their ancestors and loved ones who have shaped who they are as individuals. The aesthetic of the exhibition (including tulle, lights, glitter, rhinestones, and spray paint) is inspired by the elaborate stage art of some of their favorite artists, including Kali Uchis. In this way, the gallery becomes a stage for a performance honoring our loved ones.
