Urban developers often use the presence of a thriving artists’ community as a barometer for determining that a neighborhood can successfully be redeveloped.  With this in mind, Urban Renewal Laboratory (URL) looks at the urban environment and its development through the eyes of artists, and examines the ways in which history, community, environment, geology, technology and politics shape urban space.  The exhibit enables visitors to explore urban redevelopment and gentrification with a particular focus on San Francisco. URL is a multi-faceted exhibit consisting of an online journal and Website (www.soex.org/url), off-site and educational programs, a publication and an exhibition at Southern Exposure.
