Taiwanese artist Hung-Chih Peng uses toys, especially those made with cheap materials, as main characters in his installation “Expansion Underground”, playing upon the cynical reality of Taiwan’s political and social environment. As his country was once the biggest producer of such toys, his playful, mechanical, toy constructions function as portraits, both of himself and of society as a whole. The objects’ repetitive movements and placement within the “machine” reflect what the artist sees as the dilemma of the human condition.
