Hidden Noise/PSA Mix

May 11 - June 15, 2002

Opening Reception: May 17, 2002, 6:00 - 8:00 pm

Lead Teaching Artist: Julio Morales
Collaborators: San Francisco Art Institute, Visitation Valley Beacon Center

The PSA-Mix project is a collaboration between San Francisco Art Institute (SFAI) students and Visitation Valley Beacon Center youth who together have developed radio spots that juxtapose public interviews with ambient sounds, urban soundscapes, breakbeats, and personal stories. By experimenting with sequential, timed, and simultaneous playback, gallery visitors create their own unique audio collage that is broadcast from Southern Exposure across the Mission. Radio show topics include commentary on youth and post-youth (sub-)cultures, as well as youth-oriented public service announcements about urban life in San Francisco. The project is part of Southern Exposure’s Artist in Education Program, Visitacion Valley Beacon Center’s ChangeMakers Program, and supported by SFAI’s Youth Arts Collaborative Program. Students enrolled in Julio Morales’s SFAI audio history and production course “Hidden Noise” mentored the Beacon Center participants.
