SOUTHERN EXPOSURE AWARDS $66,000 TO BAY AREA ARTS GROUPS IN ROUND 5 OF ALTERNATIVE EXPOSURE GRANT PROGRAM
 
19 Alternative Exposure Grant Recipients Announced

San Francisco, CA, November 21, 2011 - Southern Exposure, a 37-year-old nonprofit organization that supports visual artsists is proud to announce awards totaling $66,000 to 19 projects in Round V of its Alternative Exposure grant program. Alternative Exposure supports the independent work of artists and small groups that is a defining feature of the San Francisco Bay Area art community. Alternative Exposure is made possible with major leadership support from The Andy Warhol Foundation for the Visual Arts. Additional support is provided by Grants for the Arts/San Francisco Hotel Tax Fund. In the five years since launching the program, Southern Exposure has awarded $286,000 in direct funds to 88 Bay Area projects.

Round V grant recipients are Art for a Democratic Society, Bay Area Art & Science Interdisciplinary Collaborative Sessions (BAASICS), Indigenous Arts Coalition, Liminal Space, LOOP, MacArthur B Arthur, Martina Johnston Gallery, Mattress Talks, MicroClimate Collective, Owl & Tiger Books, Parse Gallery, Pied-à-terre, Prelinger Library, Private Eye: Investigating Disability in Contemporary Art, San Francisco Electronic Music Festival, Stairwell’s, The Body is Missing, The Roving Archives, Upgrade! San Francisco. Full descriptions of the funded projects are listed below.

Alternative Exposure awards funds to groups or individuals that create frameworks of support for Bay Area artists. Grants provide direct and accessible support to a range of locally grown artist-centered projects, extending SoEx’s reach to as many new artists and audiences as possible. Grants support the work of unincorporated groups, burgeoning art and gathering spaces, publications, websites, collectives, events, and projects that fall outside the traditional frameworks of support.

An outside panel selected the 19 grantees from a pool of over 150 applicants. Panelists included: Julie Lazar, independent curator and Director, International Contemporary Arts Network; Jasmine Moorhead, Owner and Director, Krowswork; and Rosten Woo, designer, writer, educator, and co-founder of the Center for Urban Pedagogy.

Southern Exposure is committed to serving as a resource for the vibrant independent visual arts community through this and its other programs. Southern Exposure launched the Alternative Exposure grant program in 2007. Alternative Exposure was the first in a national network of regional re-granting programs supported by the Warhol Foundation. Modeled on Southern Exposure’s initiative, additional granting programs have recently been developed in Houston, TX; Chicago, IL; and Kansas City, MO.
