Midwest native, Steuart Pittman currently lives and works in Oakland, CA. He was awarded an MFA from Mills College in 2009 along with the esteemed Jay DeFeo MFA prize. He received the prestigious Peter S. Reed Foundation Award in Painting in 2016 and has twice been an SFMoMA SECA Award nominee. Currently working as a studio assistant to Bay Area painter Hung Liu, Pittman has also been an assistant to artists Ron Nagle and John Fraser. His diaristic paintings are rooted in a modernist abstract vocabulary with a decided contemporary twist. Both the humorous titles and the specific forms are inspired by events and moments from his life outside the studio.
