Cold Shoulder Painting #11

Cold Shoulder Painting #11, 2016
Richard Colman (American, b. 1976), a graduate of the School of the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston, is known for paintings that combine figurative imagery and bold geometry. Themes of life, death, and sexuality are explored through repetitive symmetrical compositions on vividly colorful canvases. Fluctuating between figuration and abstraction, some of his work focuses on geometric patterning, while other works favor figuration and narrative. Colman currently lives and works in San Francisco, California. Richard Colman’s work is bold, elusive, and overwhelming. Intricate compositions conceived in ambitious palettes showcase abstracted female figures joined in surreal, geometric arrangements that allows little room for void space. Recalling ancient Greek representation, yet firmly grounded in the present.
