MFA Royal College of Art, London BFA Massachusetts College of Art, Boston Ranu Mukherjee’s work explores states of excess, drawing links between present day global capitalism and cultural stereotypes still residual in our collective psyche. Her projects involve research and the culling of content from a variety of diverse sources ranging from 19th century Indian lithographs to the pages of Vogue, India, from ancient mythological texts to current events. Through layering and recombining, she creates an amalgam of media, subjects, ideas and time frames within the same space. Her hybrid films, works on paper and textiles explore the construction of culture through creolization, the nomadic, ecology, speculative fiction and the unknown. Recent projects include Extracted, a trilogy, on view at the Asian Art Museum SF through August 2016 and a 3 channel commission for LA County Museum of Art on view at their Stark Bar, Feb- Aug 2016. Other solo exhibitions include the San Jose Museum of Art (2012) and Gallery Wendi Norris (2011, 2013-14). Ranu’s work has been included in many group shows internationally and she was a recent artist in residence at Space118, Mumbai. Her work is in the collections of the Asian Art Museum, San Francisco, the Robert D. Bielecki Foundation NY, the Kadist Foundation, The Oakland Museum of California and the San Jose Museum of Art. She is an Associate Professor at California College of the Arts and co-founder of the collective artist 0rphan drift. She is represented by Gallery Wendi Norris.
