Voicing Places: Stories from the Maya-Mam Diaspora in Oakland

Voicing Places is a site-based video installation highlighting oral histories and storytelling from Maya-Mam community members in Oakland. The project will visually display community stories about labor, language, and Indigeneity. The installation will be publicly accessible and will be accompanied by opening events that feature Mayan dancing, film screenings, and printmaking workshops. In addition to the in-person installation, the project will be accompanied by an interactive web-based version where people can engage with the videos and films. This project will be led by Henry Sales and Alex Mejía, but will involve Maya-Mam youth.
