SoEx’s Youth Advisory Board (YAB) springs into action this fall with three artist mentors. From September-December 2009, YAB members will make work in SoEx’s new 3030 20th street home and Artists In Education classroom!
Through observing ourselves, our community and the practices of other artists, YAB members will dissect the ways in which we are everyday creators in order to see the affect our actions have on our landscapes. Students will use various forms of site-specific installations, interventions, drawing, digital manipulation, sculpture, documentation, urban theories, Situationist practices, and their everyday aesthetics to consciously create work, which represents and engages our various forms of unconscious reactions to the world around us.
YAB is a group of high school students, college students, and artists from diverse communities throughout the Bay Area. YAB serves as a task force to empower youth through arts advocacy, events and workshops. Southern Exposure teaches YAB members to use art as a community-building tool and provides them with a space to create their own events and have their collective voices heard. All Youth Advisory Board projects are youth initiated and produced. In the past, YAB has successfully produced its launch party, a screening of youth produced film and video, an all-day youth event featuring performers, artwork, and activities by other exemplary arts programs, curated a youth art exhibition, hosted a youth arts and culture website, and self produced many public events and art shows in collaboration with artist mentors and teachers.
